| Abstract: |
| Shiing-Shen Chern，through a series of major mathematical innovations，pioneered a new era in global differential geometry. His influence permeated every branch of mathematics and physics，accomplishing the miracle of leading global trends by a Chinese scientist. Chern’s ability to reach the pinnacle of mathematics was due primarily to three key factors he mastered to perfection：extraordinary training akin to“drilling through thick planks，”the freedom to consciously choose his research direction，and the flexible application of both solitary contemplation and intellectual exchange. Meanwhile，he was also a great master of science with noble character，profound thoughts and a deep affection for his country and people，worthy of being a role model for scientists in both academic pursuit and personal conduct. |
